NILU, Norwegian Institute for Air Research, is an independent non-profit research foundation est. 1969. It is the largest specialized European laboratory with core research areas within atmospheric composition, climate change, air quality, and environmental contaminants. NILU conducts environmental research and services on sources of pollution (e.g. organic compounds and microplastic) in outdoor and indoor matrices (e.g. air and dust) including chemical analysis, air sampling methodologies, atmospheric transport, transformation and deposition, exposure assessment and assessment of the effects of pollution on ecosystems, human health and materials. In addition to research, NILU operates e.g., as a national reference laboratory for air quality, a national portal for air quality (http://luftkvalitet.info) and supports a number of international conventions and assessment systems for air quality (e.g. UN ECE CLRTAP EMEP, and the EEA). NILU has coordinated or participated in many international environmental research projects. NILU holds several accreditations including ISO 9001:2004 (quality) and ISO 14001:2008 (environment) and operates several Inter/National databases and hundreds of project portals.
